Chapter 3: The Dreaded Job Application

Applying for a job requires a strategic approach and organization to maximize your chances of success. We know many candidates applying at multiple places, and not even getting an acknowledgement or being ghosted after submitting their initial document is a frustrating experience. Still, the key is to look at the application process as an art, choosing carefully areas that attract attention, and customizing your application so as to create the attraction for the brand. With AI and tools like ATS, adding keywords that match the job advert for the tools to pick up your application has become more important. However, even that is not sufficient. With thousands of applicants and hundreds of shortlists, there are out-of-the-box methods that one needs to deploy to be part of the final shortlisted pool, which includes looking for referrals in the company (hence the need for tools like LinkedIn), writing to the hiring manager or a senior leader with a compelling case for them to break the process and seek a meeting, working on your external branding as well as USP around being the best choice, and more. However, it is prudent to ensure that you understand the job description and apply only when you meet the set criteria. E.g. if someone is asking for prior financial services experience, applyonly if you have that experience. It saves you and the recruiter time and energy and reduces rejections, preserving your anguish.

Be Patient! Job applications do take time. Be patient while waiting for feedback. If a time frame is mentioned in the job posting, stick to it.
